AceShowbiz - As a devout "Wicked" enthusiast, Ariana Grande was acutely aware of the high expectations surrounding her casting as Galinda Upland. In an interview on the "Sentimental Men" podcast, the Grammy winner discussed the audition process and the pressure to embody the beloved character.
"This is something I loved so much about auditioning for 'Wicked,'" explained Grande. "Anything on this scale requires effort and dedication. It's not simply given because people recognize your name or fame."
Despite her extensive musical theater background and long-standing passion for the Tony-winning musical, Grande understood fans' hesitations about her portrayal. "I experienced initial nervousness or preconceived notions about what I might deliver or not," she admitted. However, she noted that fans haven't witnessed her extensive training and preparation for the audition.
"Based on my pop hits like 'Side to Side', I would have shared the same reservations," Grande said of her critics. "I would have been like, 'Why the f**k? This is insane.' I would have been upset as a fan knowing only '7 Rings'. But now, I understand their perspective."
"Wicked", based on the smash Broadway hit, chronicles the friendship and rivalry between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Grande) as they navigate their lives at Shiz University. Jon M. Chu is helming the Universal adaptation, set to release in two parts on November 22, 2024, and November 21, 2025.
Grande's casting received mixed reactions online. However, she has emphasized her commitment to doing the role justice. "When something once in a lifetime, like this, happens," she said, visibly moved, "every second counts."
In preparation for "Wicked", Grande temporarily put her music career on hold. She has expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring Glinda to life, a role she has cherished since childhood.
