AceShowbiz - Matty Healy, frontman of The 1975, has spoken out about the incessant public attention surrounding his personal life and how it influences his songwriting approach. Amidst widespread rumors of his brief romance with Taylor Swift in 2023, Healy has clarified his stance on writing songs inspired by short-term relationships.
Appearing on the Doomscroll podcast, Healy admitted that he "used to write about relationships a lot more" in the past. However, following his recent rise to prominence, his perspective has shifted. He expressed concern that some artists prioritize their "lore" and public image over their artistic expression.
Referencing Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," which many fans believe contains references to Healy, the singer stated, "I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about... all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons." He explained that he finds it unappealing to create music based on events that occurred years ago.
Healy emphasized his preference for songwriting that sparks meaningful conversations and promotes intellectual curiosity. "My work is, I hope, interesting art pop," he said, "that maybe helps popularize academic subjects that I'm really interested in."
While Healy remains private about his love life, Swift has reportedly incorporated their brief relationship into some of her recent songs. The title track of "The Tortured Poets Department" includes lyrics such as "You left your typewriter at my apartment / Straight from the Tortured Poets Department," potentially referencing Healy's known fondness for typewriters.
Despite the scrutiny and speculation, both Swift and Healy have moved on. Swift is currently dating NFL star Travis Kelce, while Healy is engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel.
