AceShowbiz - "Superman & Lois" didn't waste time bringing Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) back from the dead in its final season, but a major character had to sacrifice themselves to make it possible. [SPOILER ALERT] In the emotional episode 3, "Always My Hero," it was revealed that General Sam Lane (Dylan Walsh) had died a hero's death.
After being shot by a rogue Department of Defense soldier, Lane injected himself with a serum created from Superman's blood. He then sacrificed himself to Doomsday to protect his family and help revive Superman.
Lane had originally planned to use a donor's heart for the procedure, but time ran out. His sacrifice led to Superman's heart being replaced with Lane's own, ending the episode with Superman opening his eyes. However, Lara, Superman's mother, expressed concerns that the human heart may not work properly.
Walsh's departure from the series was due to budget cuts affecting the final season. Showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher explained that the decision afforded them the opportunity to wrap up storylines in a satisfying way.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Kent finally gained powers, all at once. Despite initially expressing disappointment, he quickly excelled at using them. John Henry Irons and Natalie joined the Department of Defense full-time, taking on the call names Steel and Starlight.
Lex Luthor revealed to Jordan that Lois had picked Jonathan as her favorite son, causing friction between the brothers. The episode also featured flashbacks to Sam Lane's approval of Clark's marriage to Lois.
Other highlights in the episode wereJonathan's rapid mastery of his powers stirred complicated emotions in Jordan and Lex Luthor's revelation to Jordan may be part of his plan to turn him against Lois. It also pointed out that uncertainty remains over whether Superman's revival with a human heart will succeed, setting up intriguing questions for future episodes.
