AceShowbiz - A potentially catastrophic incident was averted at former President Donald Trump's rally in Coachella Valley, California, on October 12, when an armed man was arrested for possessing illegal firearms and fake identification. Authorities, led by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, believe this intervention may have thwarted a third assassination attempt on Trump.
Vem Miller, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, was detained at a checkpoint around the rally's perimeter. Deputies discovered his black SUV was unregistered and filled with a shotgun, a loaded handgun, high-capacity magazines and multiple passports and IDs with different names. Despite claiming he was a journalist with VIP access, Miller's vehicle and credentials raised suspicions.
"I truly do believe we prevented another assassination attempt," Bianco stated during a press conference. Despite this assertion, federal agencies, including the FBI and Secret Service, expressed skepticism, suggesting that Miller's intent might have been less sinister. "The incident did not impact protective operations and former President Trump was not in any danger," they said in a joint statement.
This event marks the third serious security breach in the 2024 election cycle involving Trump. Earlier incidents include a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where gunshots injured Trump and killed a bystander, and a September incident at Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach where an armed individual was apprehended while Trump was on the course.
Miller, who holds a master's degree from UCLA and owns a CBD company, has a history of petty criminal offenses and is associated with the sovereign citizens movement. This far-right, anti-government group believes they are separate from the United States and often resist legal and governmental authority. He was released on a $5,000 bail, with no federal charges filed as of yet.
As Trump continues to draw large crowds to his rallies, the increasing frequency of these security threats highlights the intense and polarized atmosphere surrounding his campaign. "We are actively engaged in working with Secret Service and FBI to ensure this person is followed up on and all the information they can gather," Bianco emphasized.
