Kat Graham, best known from "The Vampire Diaries" is set to take on the iconic role of Diana Ross in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic. In an exclusive with PEOPLE at the 2024 TIME100 Next event, Graham described the experience of playing the 80-year-old Supremes singer as "very, very surreal". Reflecting on her transformation for the role, she humorously noted, "Hair's a little bigger."
Graham, 35, shared that the casting news was a full-circle moment for her, especially since she was working closely with her good friend Kendrick Sampson, who plays Quincy Jones in the biopic. "I've been close with Quincy for a long time... there were a lot of surreal moments happening in real-time," Graham said. Despite her excitement, she admitted, "I had never imagined myself as - who imagines themselves as Diana Ross?" yet expressed her hope of honoring Ross and other Black women with her performance.
The star-studded biopic, titled "Michael", will see Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's real-life nephew, playing the King of Pop. Graham joins a cast that includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson. The film, which promises an abundance of good music, is set for an April 18, 2025 release.
