Rupert Everett reflects on his troubled experience making the 2000 film 'The Next Best Thing' with Madonna, which he likens to a 'car crash,' and how it impacted their relationship.

AceShowbiz - Rupert Everett has opened up about the negative impact that the critical flop of his 2000 film "The Next Best Thing" had on his friendship with co-star Madonna. In an interview on the podcast "How to Fail," Everett recalled the making of the John Schlesinger-directed romantic comedy as a "car crash."

Despite modest box office success due to Madonna's video sales, the film was critically panned. "It was not a failure as such at the box office, but the film itself didn't work," said Everett.

He praised Madonna's performance, recognizing the challenges she faced as a pop star entering the world of film. However, he admitted that the experience "completely finished things for me in Hollywood."

Everett revealed that the critical reception of the film put a "strain" on his friendship with Madonna. "Friendships and failure in Hollywood are very difficult things to keep going," he explained.

When asked about the possibility of reconnecting with Madonna, Everett said it was "possible" but uncertain.

Everett also discussed "The Next Best Thing" soundtrack, specifically Madonna's cover of Don McLean's "American Pie". Despite its success as a U.K. number one single, Madonna reportedly excluded it from her greatest hits collection as a "punishment" to the song.
