AceShowbiz - The enchanting world of Genovia is set to make a comeback as Disney announces the development of "Princess Diaries 3." Directed by Adele Lim - known for her work on "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Raya and the Last Dragon" - the sequel promises to maintain the original's charm while introducing new dimensions of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship.
"As a diehard fan of the original 'Princess Diaries,' I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim stated.
First launched in 2001, "The Princess Diaries" followed the story of Mia Thermopolis, a shy American teenager who discovers she is the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom, Genovia. Directed by Garry Marshall and starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, the film quickly became a hallmark of early 2000s cinema. Its 2004 sequel saw Mia navigating the challenges of royal life, including the quest for a suitable husband.
As the new director, Lim brings a wealth of experience. She began her career writing for TV shows like "One Tree Hill" and "Lethal Weapon." Her notable screenplay credentials include "Crazy Rich Asians," a pop culture sensation that grossed nearly $175 million domestically, and "Raya and the Last Dragon." Lim made her directorial debut with "Joy Ride," a 2023 road trip comedy produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Point Grey Pictures and released by Lionsgate.
While Anne Hathaway, who gained international fame through her role as Mia, has shown interest in reprising her role, no formal agreement has been reached yet. However, hopes remain high, especially given Hathaway's recent comments on the film's progress. "We're in a good place," she shared in an interview with V Magazine.
Returning to the production team, Debra Martin Chase, who helped bring the original films to life, is set to produce once again. Executive producers include Naia Cucukov, Lim's producing partner, and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is also on board, working diligently on the script.
Fans of "The Princess Diaries" can look forward to a celebration of female power, joy, and mentorship as Disney prepares to transport audiences back to the enchanting world of Genovia. As Lim passionately explained, "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide."
Prepare your tiaras and practice your curtsies - Genovia awaits!
