After surprisingly winning the best comedy drama at the 2024 Emmys, the show's creators and cast expresses their gratitude and discusseS the power of comedy as a bridge-builder.

AceShowbiz - "Hacks" has triumphed at the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home the prestigious Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award. Co-creator Paul W. Downs, accepting the award on behalf of the cast and crew, expressed his overwhelming joy and gratitude.

"We are so lucky to live our dream and make television," Downs said. "We couldn't do it without our 'Hacks' family, all of our writers, cast, and crew. They make our dreams come true, literally."

Downs highlighted the importance of representation and diversity on television, particularly for older women. "When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we really didn't know if we could sell it," he remarked. "About 20% of our population is 60+, but only about 3% of those characters are on television. I would like to see more of them because while I'm a great young supporting actor, I really want to be a good old lead."

Writer and director Lucia Aniello echoed Downs' sentiments, emphasizing the power of comedy as a bridge-builder. "Comedy is so important to us," Aniello said. "It can bridge divides. When you laugh with someone, you have something in common with them. So please, support comedy. It speaks truth to power."

The cast of 'Hacks' also shared their thoughts on the show's success. Jean Smart, who won the Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series, explained why she was drawn to the role of Deborah.

"When I read the script, I said, 'This is everything I could possibly want for my next job,'" Smart said. "But I needed to be sure that real stand-ups could believe I was a comic. I had never been a comedian, so they were the real litmus test. And I passed, I think!"

'Hacks' premiered in 2021 and follows the complex relationship between comedian Deborah and comedy writer Ava, who come from two very different generations. The show has earned critical acclaim for its sharp writing, nuanced characters, and exploration of ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry.
