AceShowbiz - Martha Plimpton took to Instagram to denounce a report that "The Goonies 2" is in development at Warner Bros. In her post, she wrote, "There is no Goonies2 script, there is no one 'attached,' Spielberg is not directing, it's not real."
Corey Feldman also wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on September 10 that he had no knowledge of any upcoming sequel. He wrote, "I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORKX."
The "Goonies", released in 1985 and directed by Richard Donner, starred a group of young actors including Plimpton, Feldman, Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, John Matuszak, and Joe Pantoliano. The film follows a group of children who discover an ancient treasure map and embark on an adventure to find One-Eyed Willy's fortune.
Despite multiple attempts to revive "The Goonies" over the years, a sequel has yet to materialize. Director Richard Donner expressed his desire to make a sequel with the original cast in 2014, but Spielberg later revealed that they had not developed a viable idea.
In recent years, several cast members have expressed interest in participating in a sequel. Ke Huy Quan, who played Short Round in Goonies, said in 2023 that he would be open to reprising his role if the opportunity arose.
However, the recent rumors of "The Goonies 2" being in development are unfounded. Fans may be disappointed that a sequel is not currently in the works, but the original film's enduring popularity is a testament to its lasting impact on generations of viewers.
