"On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Lamar family lost our beloved son, brother, father, and friend," the statement reads. "Known to the world as Rich Homie Quan, Dequantes Devontay Lamar was a proud native of Atlanta, Georgia."
Quan's music transcended boundaries, reaching millions of fans around the globe. His triumphant spirit and captivating melodies will live on as a soundtrack to countless lives. "While he leaves us with an undeniable hole in our hearts, we are comforted by knowing his music and triumphant spirit lives on," his family said.
Born in Atlanta, Quan's artistic journey commenced in 2012. His infectious hits, such as "Type of Way" and "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)", propelled him to stardom. He graced the charts alongside fellow hip-hop icons, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
As a father of five, Quan prioritized his family above all else. His girlfriend Amber Williams described the unbearable pain of losing her "other half" in the days following his death. She shared that Quan had fallen asleep on the couch the morning of his passing and had never woken up.
Quan's father Corey Lamar, who also served as his manager and business partner, spoke to the Atlanta press about his son's legacy. He remembered Quan's athleticism, his love for baseball and his eventual decision to pursue a career in music.
"I used to tell him that it's a difference in making songs and making hits; he made hits," Lamar said. "I know that his music will live on forever."
Music journalist Jewel Wicker, an expert on Atlanta culture, hailed Quan as a "cultural architect" in the city's vibrant trap scene. "He had these really hyper-local lyrics, but these melodies and these hooks that were really accessible and really pop friendly," Wicker explained. "He was a really integral part of Atlanta's sound."
The Lamar family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support during this difficult time and promised to share details of a public memorial in the near future. The cause of Quan's death remains under investigation.
