AceShowbiz - Grammy-winning singer Mariah Carey, 55, has announced the heartbreaking news of the deaths of both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, on the same day.
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend," Carey said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
No details have been released regarding the causes of death. Patricia Carey, 87, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach while Alison Carey, 63, had a more distant relationship with her famous sister.
Despite their ups and downs, Carey maintained a relationship with her mother, performing a festive duet together in 2010. She also acknowledged her mother's influence on her vocal talent in her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey."
Carey's relationship with both Alison and her brother, Morgan, was reportedly strained. However, despite the complexities of these relationships, the singer expressed her love and gratitude for all her family members.
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," Carey said. "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
