The actor, 21, was booked into Harris County Jail on August 1, and faces a hefty $400,000 bond for the murder charge. He is also dealing with a separate theft charge, for which the bond is set at $210.
The arrest stems from a tragic event that took place on July 20. Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting in the 13503 block of North Thorntree, near Uvalde Road, only to find 20-year-old Cesar Peralta with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Peralta was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez shared the arrest details, emphasizing, "Homicide Investigators charged Akili McDowell (21) with murder in the shooting death of Cesar Peralta (20). McDowell was recently taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail."
Gonzalez confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and has urged anyone with information to contact the department's Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100.
McDowell, who rose to fame with his portrayal of a young prodigy in "David Makes Man", created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney, has been considered a rising star in Hollywood.
