AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated Cash Money reunion at Essence Festival 2024 delivered an emotional, star-studded show but lacked the full reunion fans had hoped for. Lingering tensions between Lil Wayne and his former label mates cast a shadow over the event, raising questions about unresolved issues within the Cash Money family.
The Essence Festival kicked off with former New Orleans mayor Marc Morial presenting a National Urban League proclamation to a Cash Money delegation led by Birdman's brother Ronald "Slim" Williams. Performers included a live band, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Stunna himself, B.G., The LOX, Bun B, Scarface, and 2 Chainz. Notably absent from the stage were Hot Boys members Lil Wayne and Turk.
While Lil Wayne did perform, it wasn't alongside his former bandmates. Wayne's solo 20-minute set started at around 1:30 AM, and the Cash Money logos on stage were replaced with his Young Money insignias.
"My name is Tunechi," Lil Wayne remarked as his show began with "Uproar." "I'm here on behalf of Young Money f***ing Records," he added. This notable distinction underscored the separation between himself and his former label.
Birdman seemed to throw subliminal as well. "I would never let my city down and be a p**** a** n***a for anybody,†he told the crowd.
Wayne's absence during the Hot Boys' set was conspicuous, as was Turk's. B.G. commented on social media about Turk's absence, hinting at internal conflicts. "It's only one n***a that ain't in this b***h, you heard me?" Juvie said. "He brought that on himself. N***a did a bunch of ho s**t, he can't take it back. He got to fault himself for not being here."
Turk previously cited "business issues" as the reason for his absence.
Rumors had suggested a potential Hot Boys reunion album, however, Lil Wayne dispelled these speculations on NFL star Cam Heyward's "Not Just Football" podcast. "S***, you just told me!" he exclaimed when asked about the project. He added, "I have no problem with going to that kitchen, but I ain't smell it, it ain't come through the window yet. I ain't smell the food […] They ain't told me nothing yet."
The evening culminated with Birdman, who shared an emotional reflection on his late mother, Ms. Gladys. "Every day I did this s**t it was painful for me, because I lost Ms. Gladys as a youngster and I never recovered from that," he said.
His performance, alongside Mannie Fresh and B.G., with "Still Fly" concluded the night, leaving fans with mixed feelings. The tensions between him and Wayne seem far from resolved, suggesting their past issues continue to linger.
While the Cash Money reunion at Essence Festival was a blend of excitement and nostalgia, the absence of a full Hot Boys reunion reminded fans of the complex dynamics within this iconic rap collective.
