AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp is set to embark on a new cinematic adventure as he portrays Satan in director Terry Gilliam's upcoming film, "The Carnival at the End of Days". Alongside Depp, Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges will take on the role of God. This casting news was revealed by Gilliam himself at the Annency International Animated Film Festival in France.
According to Gilliam, the film's plot revolves around God's decision to wipe out humanity due to its transgressions against the Earth. However, Satan, portrayed by Depp, emerges as the unlikely savior. Gilliam explains that Satan requires souls to populate hell and without humanity, his job would cease to exist, leaving him without an eternal purpose.
The film's cast also includes Adam Driver and Jason Momoa. Gilliam envisions God as a force of nature that can communicate, requiring the use of animation to bring it to life. The director also expresses the need for a female character to complete the cast, although he has not yet disclosed who he is considering for the role.
Gilliam has previously collaborated with Depp in films such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". Depp's involvement marks a significant step in his career rehabilitation following his publicized legal battles with Amber Heard.
Production on "The Carnival at the End of Days" is scheduled to commence in January 2025. Gilliam received a lifetime achievement honorary Cristal award at the Annecy animation film festival.
