AceShowbiz - Netflix will premiere Japan's first same-sex dating reality TV series, "The Boyfriend", on July 9. Hosted by an eclectic mix of personalities, the show will follow nine men living together and working shifts at a coffee truck for a month. Amidst the romantic pursuits, they will foster deep friendships and reflect on their own identities.
"Our focus wasn't just on romance but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth," said Dai Ota, executive producer at Netflix Japan. This focus reflects the growing cultural shifts in Japan, which has recently taken legal steps towards recognizing LGBT+ rights.
However, same-sex marriage remains illegal in Japan, and the series highlights the need for progress. "The Japanese government now needs to move towards legalizing same-sex marriage," said Jang Boram of Amnesty International.
Despite the challenges, "The Boyfriend" aims to celebrate love in all its forms. Chief producer Keisuke Hishida said, "I discussed with the cast how growth stems from shared friendships and experiences."
Producer Taiki added, "I listened to each participant with a goal to produce a show that left everyone feeling valued and loved."
The series boasts a warm and inviting teaser trailer featuring Glen Check's "Dazed & Confused" and three teaser posters, one of which is an artwork by Korean artist Son Eunkyoung.
With 10 episodes releasing weekly on Tuesdays, "The Boyfriend" promises to be a groundbreaking and heart-touching exploration of love, friendship, and personal growth in modern Japan.
