AceShowbiz - "Days of Our Lives" actor Greg Vaughan, 50, was hospitalized on Thursday, March 14 after being diagnosed with severe altitude sickness during a spring break vacation in Colorado.
Vaughan posted on Instagram that after skiing and snowboarding for a day in Breckenridge, he experienced shortness of breath, headaches, and congestion. Despite consuming fluids and over-the-counter remedies, his condition worsened.
At urgent care, he learned his blood oxygen level had dropped to 54% and his lungs were full of fluids. Altitude sickness occurs when the body struggles to adjust to higher altitudes, reducing oxygen intake.
Vaughan received oxygen and intravenous fluids and was advised to leave the mountain immediately. He opted to return home with an oxygen tank for his remaining vacation.
Vaughan's co-stars expressed concern, with Deidre Hall (Marlena) saying, "Oh honey! I'm so sorry." Robert Scott Wilson (Alex) added, "My brother... I know you got at least 9 lives left, but take a breather."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), altitude sickness is common at ski resorts in Colorado, particularly those located above 8,000 feet. It advises gradually ascending over several days and avoiding "going too high too fast."
Vaughan concluded his post by emphasizing the importance of paying attention to one's body and appreciating life's simple moments.
