Announcing her positive test on air was Sheinelle Jones during the show's 8 A.M. hour. "By the way, it has been an interesting morning for us," Sheinelle explained. "As we said, Savannah left early, she wasn't feeling great, so she took a COVID test. It came back positive."
Sheinelle went on to say, "So, as soon as we found out, she rushed home to rest up. So Savannah, we love you, wishing you a speedy recovery."
This wasn't the first time for Savannah to miss "Today" broadcast due to COVID-19. The anchor, who was vaccinated, was absent from the show back in January and May 2022 after contracting the virus. "So this happened - again! Covid +, air filter on 'turbo' and it will be an isolating Mother's Day for this mama!!!" she wrote on Instagram in May 2022. "I feel fine, just slight cold so far. Thankful to be vaccinated!"
Meanwhile, Savannah's sick day arrived amid fellow anchor Hoda Kotb's week-long absence from the NBC morning shows. As there's no official statement about the matter, fans were concerned especially after she posted a cryptic message on social media.
On Monday, February 27, the 58-year-old took to her Instagram account to share a picture with "Choose Hope" written on it. She didn't further elaborate the post as she simply left two red heart emojis over the image.
In the comments section, fans expressed their concern and showed endless support to her. "Today show just isn't the same without you! I hope you're OK," one fan said. Another fan commented, "But boy if they are letting you go … people are going to drop like flys [sic] watching Today. We Love Hoda!"
Someone added, "Hope everything is OK Hoda. You are missed." One other, meanwhile, assumed that she was expanding her family after adopting daughters Haley Joy (6) and Hope (3) in February 2017 and April 2019, respectively. "Did you get another baby, Hoda? This is usually what happens when you go missing for 2 wks," the fan wrote. "Sure hope, it's something good."
