In a new interview, Universal Pictures film chief Donna Langley gushes about the 'great and amazing female characters' in the franchise and the new addition of Brie Larson.

AceShowbiz - A female-driven "Fast & Furious" movie is still in the cards despite no official announcement just yet. Universal Pictures boss confirms that she entertains the idea of a possible spin-off centering on the female characters of the long-running franchise.

"I would love to see a female 'Fast'," Universal Pictures film chief Donna Langley says in a new interview with Business Insider. She adds of Vin Diesel's reaction to the potential project. "So would Vin."

Of why an all-female "Fast & Furious" spin-off would be interesting, Langley gushes, "We have so many great and amazing female characters in our franchise and now there's the new addition of Brie Larson to add to the incredible roster. I would love to see us do a female 'Fast'."

The talk about the possible spin-off first began after Michelle Rodriguez threatened to quit the franchise unless women got more love. The outspoken Latina, who has played Diesel's love interest in the franchise films, spoke out following the release of the eighth movie, "The Fate of the Furious" (2017), insisting she'd walk away if writers didn't give female characters stronger story lines.

"I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise," she said in June 2017.

Almost two years later, Diesel revealed that the upcoming spin-off had been in development. "This week, we heard a pitch for the 'Fast' female protagonist driven spinoff I created in 2017," he captioned a photo of himself and "Fast & Furious" franchise executive producer Samantha Vincent in early 2019. "You can tell by the smile on Samantha's face that it was VERY exciting."

Ludacris backed the project as he said in an interview to promote "F9" last year, "The girls need a spin-off." He added, "That's who needs a spinoff. All of the badass, kick-ass women in this film. That's who deserves it."

Jordana Brewster also weighed in on the potential spin-off, "Think about all the people we could bring back, right? We could bring back Eva Mendes, who'd be incredible to work with. There's Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Nathalie [Emmanuel], me, Anna [Sawai], Michelle. It would be really, really cool. I can't speak to the discussions, but I think it would be awesome."

The "Fast & Furious" franchise, created by Gary Scott Thompson with the first film being launched in 2001, has spawned a total of nine films and a spin-off, "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" (2019), centering on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham. The next film in the franchise, "Fast X", is due out on May 19, 2023.
