Mariah Carey Calls Out Trolls Who Discredit Her Songwriting Skills at Hall of Fame Induction

During her acceptance speech, the 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' hitmaker shows how proud she is to be among 33 female Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees.

AceShowbiz - Mariah Carey has a serious reminder for those discrediting her songwriting skills. During her speech at the 2022 Hall of Fame induction, the "Without You" hitmaker clapped back at trolls who insisted that she's not a "songwriter."

"I constantly have to remind people that I'm a songwriter," the 53-year-old declared at the Thursday, June 16 ceremony. "It's become a joke, to the point where … because they're all into the diva thing, it's like, 'Oh my gosh, she's a diva, wow, diva.' "

"You may be somewhat familiar with the meme of me going over and over, 'As a songwriter, as a songwriter, as a songwriter, as a songwriter!' " the five-time Grammy-winning artist added. "So hopefully tonight, we can create another meme, AS. A. SONGWRITER!' "

Though so, Mariah used to think that musicians always perform songs that they wrote by themselves. "I just always assumed the person that you're listening to on the radio was the one who wrote the song," she admitted.

"But to know the people that are sort of the unsung heroes of the whole thing, it's an amazing situation," the mother of two went on gushing. "So please, one more round of applause for yourselves."

Before concluding her message, Mariah showed how proud she is to be among 33 female Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees. "Out of the 439 total inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, only 32 have been women up until this moment. Now it's 33," she divulged. "As my father once told me, 'You did good, kid.' "

Mariah received the accolade just weeks after she was hit with a $20 million lawsuit over "All I Want for Christmas Is You" song title. FIling the lawsuit was Andy Stone, who claimed he co-wrote and recorded a song called "All I Want For Christmas Is You" a couple of years before Mariah released her blockbuster Christmas jingle.
