The three-time Oscar nominee is honored with fighter jets and the Palme d'Or at the premiere of his movie 'Top Gun: Maverick', which is also attended by co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm and more.

AceShowbiz - Tom Cruise was treated to a more-than-warm welcome at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Touching down in France on Wednesday, May 18 to screen his new movie "Top Gun: Maverick", the actor received a surprise Palme d'Or at the event.

After the final frame hit the screen close to 10 P.M., the film received a five-minute standing ovation that brought Cruise to tears. The three-time Oscar nominee was given a tribute reel before the film played.

Before he took the stage, eight French fighter jets took the sky streaming blue, white and red smoke to match the colors of the French flag. "An incredible evening and an incredible time," the 59-year-old said of the moment to the crowd, "Just to see everyone's faces. It's been 36 years since 'Top Gun' and we had to hold this for two years because of the pandemic."

"Thank you Paramount people, this was a dream to be here with you," he continued. "They all worked so hard to bring this to the big screen, and it's a dream to be here," he added, before turning the attention back to the festival, "I'm going to take this all in and I'm never going to forget this evening."

"Thank you for being here. We're here for you. I make these movies for all of you. I'm of you in ever meeting, in every moment," Cruise further expressed his gratitude, "Especially in Cannes, you love movies."

Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux then presented Cruise with the unexpected Palme d'Or, which rendered him speechless. He accepted with a "Wow" and received another standing ovation from the crowd.

Prior to the film screening, Cruise hit the red carpet of the festival with his co-stars, including Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm and Jay Ellis. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski were also on hand to present the movie.

"Top Gun: Maverick" will have a U.K. premiere in London on Thursday, before it hits U.S. cinemas on May 27.
