AceShowbiz - Naturi Naughton has inserted herself in the controversy surrounding Phylicia Rashad and Bill Cosby. The "Power" actress took to her social media account to jump into Phylicia's defense after the latter was slammed for celebrating Bill's prison release over the weekend.
In her Instagram Story update, Naturi criticized haters for canceling the "Creed" actress. "Why are Black People so quick to #Cancel each other!" the 3LW singer wrote on Monday, July 5. "We are ALLOWED to have different opinions and it doesn't make you ANTI-anything!"
She concluded her post, "@phyliciarashad I stand with you! #TheCosbyShowChangedLives."
Phylicia, who played Clair Huxtable on NBC sitcom "The Cosby Show", landed in hot water for sounding excited shortly after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned Cosby's conviction on June 30. "FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!" so she tweeted.
She, however, deleted the post after many called her insensitive to Bill's alleged sexual assault victims. Many also called for her dismissal from the university. "My remarks were in no way directed towards survivors of sexual assault. I vehemently oppose sexual violence, find no excuse for such behavior, and I know that Howard University has a zero-tolerance policy toward interpersonal violence," Phylicia wrote in a letter, posted Friday, July 2.
Bill then stood up for Rashad. "Howard University you must support ones Freedom of Speech [Ms. Rashad], which is taught or suppose to be taught everyday at that renowned law school, which resides on your campus," he declared in a statement released through his longtime spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, on Sunday, July 4, America's birthday.
"This mainstream media are the Insurrectionists, who stormed the Capitol," he randomly continued, referencing the January 6 siege by Donald Trump supporters and right wing extremists in Washington, D.C. "Those same Media Insurrectionists are trying to demolish the Constitution of these United State of America on this Independence Day. No technicality - it's a violation of ones rights & we the people stand in support of Ms. Phylicia Rashad [sic]."
