'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It' trumps the John Krasinski-directed horror sequel in its first week, leading the domestic chart with approximately $24 million.

AceShowbiz - "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" has scared its way to the peak of box office. The third and latest installment of the horror film franchise has landed atop the domestic chart with an estimated $24 million on its first weekend.

Its opening gross exceeded initial projections and is considered a strong one in this pandemic era, especially since the film is made available simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service at no extra cost to subscribers for a month.

"The Conjuring 3" victory marks the reign of horror at box office for two consecutive weeks after "A Quiet Place Part II" debuted at No. 1 last week. The threequel from New Line Cinema, however, failed to best the Emily Blunt-starring pic's record for the best opening during the pandemic era with $48 million.

Heading into the weekend, industry experts predicted that the "A Quiet Place" sequel would repeat its victory at the North American box office. The movie, which took in an impressive $58 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, however, falls into the second place in its second week, garnering approximately additional $19.5 million from 3,744 theaters across the states.

The second week's domestic haul brings the movie's domestic gross to $88 million so far. Overseas, the John Krasinski-directed pic brings in another $19 million for a current global tally of $138 million.

The combined performance of "The Conjuring 3" and "A Quiet Place 2" has industry experts optimistic about the recovery of the movie business after a terrible year of delays and deserted theaters. "This is another positive sign for the industry," says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "Two similar movies on top of each other doing these numbers shows vibrancy in the market. It's very good to see."

Back to this week's top five, Disney's live-action "Cruella" drops one spot to No. 3 with approximately $11.2 million on its second weekend. DreamWorks Animations' "Spirit Untamed" makes its debut at No. 4 with an estimated $6.2 million, followed by another Disney pic, "Raya and the Last Dragon", which drops from No. 3 to No. 5 with around $1.3 million.
