Reluctant to be a burden on the National Health Service amid the coronavirus pandemic, the 'Thor: The Dark World' actor is determined to protect his immune system.

AceShowbiz - Christopher Eccleston is cutting down on drinking during the coronavirus pandemic so he's strong enough to fight off COVID-19 should he catch the disease.

The "Doctor Who" star has battled anorexia and depression in the past, but knows he's more fortunate than many in having plenty of room to exercise at home.

In order to avoid being a burden on the National Health Service (NHS) at a time of high pressures, the 56 year old is going on a lockdown health kick and cutting down on drinking.

"If I was in a tower block without a back garden I don't know how I'd handle it (lockdown)," he tells U.K. TV host Lorraine Kelly. "Exercise has helped me. I've cut down on the booze... because I'm thinking if I can protect my immune system... my aim is to be able to handle it without going to hospital."

"If I can keep myself away from the NHS, if somebody older... needs a bed they'd get the bed."

The star also hopes the good work done by NHS staff reminds politicians and the public how critical they are to the nation.

"I'm hoping now... that the world has changed, the NHS will no longer be a political football for any of the parties and that it is protected because it is the greatest expression of Britain we have," he says.
