Though closing its theme parks and the Blue Man Group shows, Universal chiefs make the decision to keep its hotels and Los Angeles' CityWalk open for the time being.

AceShowbiz - Universal Orlando is closing its doors amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic - one day after its California counterpart announced a similar move.

Following the closures of Disney's amusement parks worldwide, Universal bosses have also chosen to shut down their resorts as the number of coronavirus cases rises globally.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to assist with our nation's preventive efforts, Universal Orlando Resort will temporarily close its theme parks and Blue Man Group shows beginning Monday, March 16," company chiefs shared in a statement. "We anticipate remaining closed through the end of March - but will continue to evaluate the situation."

They added that Universal hotels, and CityWalk, a pedestrianised retail and dining area in Los Angeles, will remain open for the time being and that guests who have booked travel packages or tickets can call for updates.

"Thank you in advance for your patience, as we are experiencing high call volumes at this time," they added. "We are working hard to provide a higher level of service and update our website to help serve all of our guests."

The outbreak of COVID-19 has seen more than 162,000 cases of the illness registered, resulting in more than 6,000 deaths since it began in December (19).
