The studio has hired 'WandaVision' writer Megan McDonnell to pen the script for the follow-up to the 2019 hit movie starring Brie Larson as the titular superhero.

AceShowbiz - Marvel Studios continues to move past "Avengers: Endgame" with a new movie centering on one of the beloved superheroes which were featured in the 2019 blockbuster hit. The studio has reportedly put a "Captain Marvel" sequel in development as one of the films that will be released in its next phase.

According to The Hollywood Reporter which first broke the news, rising scribe Megan McDonnell, who is among the staff writers on upcoming Marvel series "WandaVision", has been tapped to pen the script for the follow-up to the Brie Larson-starring pic. She is reportedly in final negotiations to seal her deal.

Meanwhile, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the first film, are not expected to return for the sequel. They, however, will remain a force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they are currently in talks to direct a possible Disney+ series.

There's still no word on who will replace Boden and Fleck on the director's seat, but Marvel is said to be searching for a female director to fill the position. Larson is expected to reprise her role as Carol Danvers a.k.a. the titular superhero in the sequel, which is eying a potential 2022 release.

Larson's Captain Marvel was first introduced in the big screen in the 2019 solo film, before joining the Avengers in "Avengers: Endgame". The solo movie got majorly positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing a total of $1.128 billion worldwide.

Despite the movie's success, Marvel did not immediately announce the sequel. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019 during the company's Hall H panel, Marvel's head Kevin Feige claimed they still had no idea about the future of several of its franchises. "We didn't even mention that we're making 'Black Panther 2' and we didn't mention that 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3' is coming. We didn't even have time to talk about 'Captain Marvel 2', by the way. I didn't even have time to talk about 'The Fantastic Four'. And there's no time left to talk about mutants," he said at the time.
