AceShowbiz - Janelle Monae is speaking out about her gender. The actress and singer participated in the "I Am Non Binary" trend on Twitter by announcing that she is non-binary on Friday, January 10, much to fans' delight.
Her announcement was accompanied with a tweet that featured a GIF of Stevonnie, a non-binary character on "Steven Universe", saying, "I am an experience" when someone asked whether they are a boy or a girl. The caption of the post read, "There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary." Janelle retweeted the post and added the hashtag, "I am non-binary."
Many were overjoyed by her announcement, calling her a legend and asking what pronouns she prefers. "Thank you for always living your truth! You are such a light!" one said. "Because you spoke up today, some person out there was lifted from the darkness of being afraid, unseen and uncertain of their identity in a society that hates LGBTQ+ people," another gushed. "Thank you for being a voice to those finding their own, and for publicly sharing something intimate."
Someone called the "Hidden Figures" star an "inspiration," as someone raved, "I love you so much, thanks for speaking up for your truth, and, by consequence, also mine." There was also one who commented underneath her tweet, "You are truly the monarch we need but don't deserve. Yet."
Janelle, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, has been open about her sexuality. Back in 2018, she revealed that she's pansexual through an interview. "Being a queer black woman in America... someone who has been in relationships with both men and women -- I consider myself to be a free-(love proponent)," she said at the time. "But then later I read about pansexuality and was like, 'Oh these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to learning more about who I am."
