The Mexican American actor, who was best known as Chelsea Handler's talk show sidekick, passed away at the age of 63 just one day after he went to hospital in Mexico City.

AceShowbiz - Chelsea Handler's former TV sidekick Chuy Bravo has died.

The actor, who was a staple on the comedienne's talk show "Chelsea Lately", passed away on Sunday, December 15, a day after he was hospitalised with stomach pains in Mexico City, reports TMZ.

The Mexican-American star, born Jesus Melgoza, was 63.

"Chelsea Lately" writer Heather McDonald has paid tribute to Bravo on Instagram, writing, "I just heard minutes ago about our Chuy. I don't have many details but we are finding (out) now. Please keep his family in your prayers and remember all the laughs and joy he brought to so many of us."

Handler has yet to comment on the sad loss, but just days earlier, she shared her birthday wishes for Bravo with a sweet post on social media.

"Happy Birthday to my OG (original gangster) Nugget @chuybravo," she wrote on December 7, alongside a snap of herself standing behind the diminutive actor on the set of "Chelsea Lately".

"I love this picture because--not only does it look like Chuy just launched out of my peekachu, I look like a member of ZZ Top."

"Happy birthday Chuy, and thank you for 8 years of heavy petting."

Bravo, a prostate cancer survivor and recovering alcoholic, began acting in the early 1990s and his screen credits include 2005 movie "The Honeymooners", and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End" in 2007.

He went on to star alongside Handler on "Chelsea Lately" from 2007 until its end in 2014.
