Branding the sketch comedy show 'very sexist,' the 'Veep' star admits during a discussion with Stephen Colbert that she was 'miserable' when working on it in the 80s.

AceShowbiz - Julia Louis-Dreyfus was "miserable" when she worked on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1980s, admitting the atmosphere on the set of the U.S. TV show was "very sexist."

The 58-year-old "Veep" actress opened up about her time on the variety series during a discussion with Stephen Colbert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday night (December 07).

Reflecting on joining the comedy show at the tender age of just 21, Julia explained, "I was unbelievably naive and I didn't really understand how the dynamics of the place worked. It was very sexist -- very sexist. People were doing crazy drugs at the time. I was oblivious. I just thought, 'Oh, wow! He's got a lot of energy!' "

However, despite not enjoying her time on the show, labelling it "miserable," Julia did admit that it was extremely "informative" in terms of helping her develop a system to help her choose future projects.

"It was a pretty brutal time, but it was a very informative time for me," Julia added. "It is important and so basic, but I just felt like, 'I don't have to; I don't have to do this, I don't have to walk and crawl through this kind of nasty glass if it's not ultimately going to be fulfilling. And so that's how I sort of moved forward from that moment and I sort of applied that kind of 'fun meter' to every job I've had since and it definitely has been very helpful."

After working on "Saturday Night Live", Julia went on to star on TV shows such as "Seinfeld", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Web Therapy" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine".
