AceShowbiz - George Chambers, a founder of the soul group The Chambers Brothers has died at the age of 88.

George, who founded the band as a gospel group with his brothers Lester, Joe Chambers, and Willie Chambers, in 1954, passed away on Saturday, October 12, his family announced on the band's Facebook page.

"To all our fans, friends and loved ones, I was informed this morning at about 5AM that my brother George, known as 'Pops' Chambers, has passed," their statement read. "We thank you for all your years of Love Peace and Happiness."

The Chambers Brothers remained largely unknown until the mid-1960s, by which time they'd added drummer Brian Keenan and their blend of folk, soul, gospel, rock, and R&B earned them influential fans and saw them record with Bob Dylan.

They had their biggest hit in 1968, with their psychedelic 11-minute single "Time Has Come Today", which made it to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band split in 1972, but reformed just two years later and continued to tour until the mid-1990s.
