The sequel to Stephen King's horror adaptation easily topples 'Angel Has Fallen' from the first place on its debut weekend, scoring the second-highest opening for a horror movie behind the first film.

AceShowbiz - "It Chapter Two" has floated to the top of North American box office on its first weekend. The sequel to Stephen King's horror adaptation debuts atop the chart with an estimated $91 million from ticket sales within its first three days in theaters, marking the highest R-rated debut of the year ahead of previously-released films like "Us" and "Good Boys".
Despite the high anticipation for the follow-up to the 2017 hit horror movie, the sequel couldn't match the first movie's record of $123.4 million when it opened in September 2017. "Chapter Two", however, has scored the second-highest opening for a horror movie behind the first film.
Jeff Goldstein, who oversees domestic distribution for Warner Bros., still calls the new movie's opening "sensational" and isn't concerned that "Chapter Two" didn't hit the heights of the first. "How many movies open to $91 million? That was lightning in a bottle," he says. "You don't get lightning in a bottle twice. You get close, though."
Internationally, the movie debuted in par with the original film. It raked in $94 million from 75 markets for a current global total of $185 million.
Centering on the adults version of the Losers' Club members, "Chapter Two" holds an approval rating of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, lower that the first movie's 86% positive reviews. Audiences, however, gave it a consistent B-plus grade on CinemaScore.
Besides the Andy Muschietti-directed pic, there isn't any other big movies released last week. Hence, the "It" sequel is the only new arrival cracking the top ten of the domestic chart. Holdovers in the top five include former two-time champion "Angel Has Fallen", which is pushed to No. 2 with approximately $6 million, and "Good Boys", which also falls one spot to No. 3 with additional $5.4 million.
"The Lion King (2019)" drops another spot to No. 4 with approximately $4.2 million, while faith-based sports drama "Overcomer" is up one place to No. 5 with an estimated $3.8 million.
