AceShowbiz - Harvey Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to a new indictment that adds two new charges of sexual assault to his upcoming criminal trial.
The disgraced movie mogul entered the plea relating to the sexual assault charges from multiple women on Monday, August 26 in a Manhattan, New York, courtroom. He arrived wearing a suit and tie, with his hands cuffed behind his back, and ignored questions from waiting reporters as he headed into the courtroom.
Earlier this month, Manhattan District Attorney D.A. Cyrus Vance's team added the two new charges of sexual assault, from two women in 2006 and 2013, to the existing charges. They argued that the additional indictment was necessary to allow actress Annabella Sciorra, who claims the producer raped her, to testify in the trial. However, the defense team argued that the request for a new indictment proves that the prosecution's case is in disarray.
Weinstein's case, which had been due to start a five-week trial on September 9, will now begin in January (2020).
The 67-year-old producer has pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges in an earlier indictment. These include rape and predatory sexual assault.
He could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted.
More than 70 women have accused Weinstein of decades-old sexual misconduct, but he has denied the allegations and maintains any sexual encounters were consensual.
