Producer Scott Rudin announces that the hit production that is based on author Harper Lee's classic book has become the first American play to gross more than $2 million in one week.

AceShowbiz - Aaron Sorkin's stage adaptation of "To Kill a Mockingbird" has set a new Broadway record as the first American play to gross more than $2 million (£1.57 million) in one week.

Ticket sales for the hit production, based on author Harper Lee's classic book, passed the milestone in the week of shows ending on Sunday, June 23, producer Scott Rudin has announced.

The overall record for any play is held by producers behind J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", which raked in $2.5 million (£1.96 million) in the final week of 2018, reports Deadline.

Box office figures for "To Kill a Mockingbird", which opened late last year, have continued to improve week upon week, despite the fact the production was snubbed in the Best Play category at the recent Tony Awards, where Celia Keenan-Bolger secured the show's only win for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

The play had been nominated for a total of nine prizes, including Best Direction of a Play for Bartlett Sher and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Jeff Daniels, who lost out to Bryan Cranston for "Network".

Daniels will step down from his role as lawyer Atticus Finch in November after a year onstage, with Ed Harris taking over the male lead.
