AceShowbiz - Netflix officials are reportedly developing a new movie featuring the main characters from the "Wizard of Oz" and "Alice in Wonderland" franchises.

Dorothy & Alice is designed as a crossover "fantasy adventure epic," in which author L. Frank Baum's heroine is sent to a home for girls who experience troubling nightmares, where she befriends Alice, from the beloved books by Lewis Carroll.

According to Collider, Anna Klassen has been hired to revamp the script for the project, which was originally drafted by Justin Merz.

"The Cheshire Cat is out of the bag," Klassen tweeted. "I'm writing DOROTHY & ALICE for @Netflix, a fantasy adventure epic."

"I grew up reading these books & this project has been endlessly fun to craft - to reinvent treasured characters and explore the worlds I wanted to inhabit as a kid."

The film idea was acquired by streaming service officials in 2017, with plans to launch it as a franchise.

"Alice in Wonderland" has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions, most famously as an animated movie by Disney in 1951, before Tim Burton created a live-action version in 2010, starring Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. They all reprised their roles for the 2016 follow-up, "Alice Through the Looking Glass".

Meanwhile, Judy Garland starred as Dorothy in 1939's "Wizard of Oz", while director Sam Raimi revisited the fantasy world for 2013's "Oz: The Great and Powerful", which was described as a prequel to the classic film, and featured James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams.
