AceShowbiz - Marvel Studios has found a director for its first Asian-led superhero movie "Shang-Chi". Destin Daniel Cretton has landed the coveted gig, reportedly after edging out Justin Tipping ("Dear White People"), Alan Yang ("Master of Young", "Tigertail") and Deborah Chow ("Reign", "Marvel's Jessica Jones" and "The Mandalorian"), who were also in the running for the job.

Cretton is best known for writing and directing "Short Term 12" (2013), his second feature film, which received widespread acclaim from critics and festivals alike. The movie stars Brie Larson as a supervisor in a home for at-risk youth. Cretton reunites with the Academy Award-winning actress, who will star in "Captain Marvel", in "Just Mercy", which also stars "Black Panther" actor Michael B. Jordan. Cretton has also worked with "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler to develop television series "Scenes for Minors".

Cretton's hiring is in line with the studio's goal to take "Shang-Chi" in a direction like "Black Panther" and populate it with Asian-American talent. Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham has been previously tapped to write the screenplay.

Shang-Chi was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin, and first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1973. In Marvel Comics, he is depicted as an extraordinary master of numerous unarmed and weaponry-based wushu styles, including the use of the gun, nunchaku and jian. He is the son of China-based globalist and was trained as a martial art assassin by his father. He later became a hero after rebelling against his father's ways. He also learns that his revered father might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be and is closer to what others call him: The Devil’s Doctor.

As always, Marvel Studios' head Kevin Feige is producing the film, with Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Jonathan Schwartz on board as executive producers. No cast and release date are set for the movie just yet.
