Giving a ray of hope to the domestic movie competition, 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World' debuts at No. 1 with an estimated $55.5 million.

AceShowbiz - "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" warms up the North American box office after weeks of lackluster performance since the beginning of 2019. The third and final installment of DreamWorks Animation' fantasy film franchise debuts atop the chart with an estimated $55.5 million, marking the best opening of 2019 so far.

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" also has the best opening for a "How to Train Your Dragon" film, surpassing the first film's 2010 opening of $43.7 million and the sequel's, "How to Train Your Dragon 2", $49.5 million debut in 2014.

The movie far exceeded box office expectations and it's more surprising since the threequel was made on a lower budget than its two predecessors. "The Hidden World" appears to ride on good reviews, with an approval rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and an "A" grade from audience on CinemaScore.

The animated film has also made $216.9 million overseas since it was released in January, bringing its current global total to $274.9 million.

At No. 2 is last week's winner "Alita: Battle Angel", which dropped 57.9% percent in ticket sales for an additional $12 million in its second weekend. "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" also falls one spot to No. 3 with approximately $10 million.

"Fighting with My Family" surges from No. 40 to No. 4 as it expanded to 2,711 theaters this week after previously only opening in four theaters. It brought in an estimated $8 million haul in its second week for a current domestic total of $8.2 million.

"Isn't It Romantic" loses out two places to round out the top five with additional $7.5 million.

Despite it being an Oscar weekend, none of the Best Pictures nominees place within the top ten. The closest to the top ten is "Green Book", which is down from No. 10 to No. 11 with additional $2.1 million. The Don Shirley biopic, which Best Picture win has sparked online criticism, may benefit from its Oscar wins at box office in the week to come.
