AceShowbiz - Chrissy Metz is taking audience to witness a miracle in "Breakthrough". The first trailer of the movie has been released by 20th Century Fox, centering on a mother whose undying love for her son and her strong devotion to God helps restore her son's life.

Joyce Smith (Metz) gets one of the most dreaded phone calls for a parent when her son, John, falls through thin ice. Hinting at how dire his condition is, one first responder says, "He's been underwater for more than 15 minutes. This is gonna be a recovery, not a rescue."

"We've done everything medically possible - there's nothing more we can do," a doctor tells her. The grieving mom refuses to give up, praying to God to restore her son's life. The boy miraculously breathes again, much to the wonder of her husband and all staff at the hospital.

But the critical period is not yet over. When another doctor seems to be skeptical about his recovery, Joyce says her son is a fighter. Her faith inspires others to pray for John and on the journey people around her learn to understand how God works through them.

According to the official synopsis, " 'Breakthrough' is based on the inspirational true story of one mother's unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith's adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John's recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction."

From producer DeVon Franklin ("Miracles From Heaven") and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte ("Seven Pounds") from Joyce Smith's own book, "Breakthrough" is described as an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

Metz shares to PEOPLE about her "really emotional" experience to play a real-life character. "To play a real person is very different than creating your own character," the actress says. "There's all this pressure, like I want to tell the story appropriately and I want to do it justice."

She also opens up about the challenge she faced in playing the character. "It's really intimidating because you do want them to feel good about [your performance]. Obviously, nothing is going to be perfect, but you want them to feel like you captured their essence, that was my objective," the "This Is Us" star says. "It was definitely challenging, it's very emotional and there's a lot going on. I heard [Smith] is very happy, phew, thank goodness. But it was very, very challenging, mentally."

Also starring Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Sam Trammell and Dennis Haysbert, "Breakthrough" is directed by Roxann Dawson from a script by Grant Nieporte. The drama film is due out April 12, 2019 in the U.S., just in time for Easter.
