The 'Sound of Music' star lends her voice to a character in the DC movie, says producer Peter Safran.

AceShowbiz - Julie Andrews is surprisingly joining the cast of upcoming superhero movie "Aquaman". It's the film's producer Peter Safran who reveals the veteran actress' previously unannounced part in the potential blockbuster picture.

The British actress, who is widely recognized for her role as Maria von Trapp in 1965's "The Sound of Music", lends her voice to the mythic Karathen, which is described as "an undersea creature that holds the key to Arthur Curry's (Jason Momoa) quest to unite the Atlantean and surface worlds."

"We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered," Safran tells Entertainment Weekly about casting Andrews for the role. "And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer."

Andrews' involvement in the DC movie is pretty interesting since the Aquaman movie is going to open in U.S. theaters on December 21, two days before the release of "Mary Poppins Returns", putting the two movies head-to-head at box office. The 83-year-old actress starred as the magical nanny in the 1964 musical fantasy film, but she isn't returning for the reboot, which has Emily Blunt portraying the title character.

Safran jokes about the timing of the superhero flick which is going against "Mary Poppins Returns", "Who knew that 'Aquaman' would have the real Mary Poppins this Christmas?"

Andrews last appeared on the big screen in 2010's "Tooth Fairy" which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. She has since had voice roles in such films as "Shrek Forever After", "Enchanted" and "Despicable Me". She also appeared on Netflix's children's series "Julie's Greenroom".

"Aquaman" is directed by James Wan with the script provided by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall. Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman are also starring in the movie.
