Along with the selfie, the cyclist reveals he had hurt himself while riding in Snowmass Village, Aspen.

AceShowbiz - Lance Armstrong has been hospitalised with a head injury after falling off his bike while riding in Colorado.

The disgraced sportsman, who in 2012 was stripped of the seven Tour de France titles he won after it was found he used performance enhancing drugs, posted a picture of his bloodied face on Instagram on Wednesday, August 09 and revealed he had hurt himself while riding in Snowmass Village, Aspen.

He captioned the image: "Well, sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail! The Tom Blake trail (one of my faves) came up and tried to KO (knockout) my a** today. Took quite the blow to the noggin' (head) so swung by the Aspen Valley Hospital (great facility!) to get my head checked."

In his post he also thanked the medical staff who treated him and added that he decided to get checked out at hospital as at 46 years old, he is more cautious about his health than he was in youth.

Before anti-doping officials concluded Armstrong was a drugs cheat, he was one of the world's most revered sportsman, having recovered from cancer to dominate cycling's toughest race.

Earlier this year he agreed a deal with the U.S. authorities to pay back $5 million (£3.9 million) of the earnings he made while riding for the government funded U.S. Postal team. The federal court case could have cost the cyclist as much as $100 million (£78 million) but prosecutors settled for a smaller sum.
