Legendary Entertainment announces plan to make a feature film based on the popular Japanese anime at the 2018 Anime Expo.

AceShowbiz - Legendary Entertainment is bringing Gundam to live on the big screen. The studio is developing a live-action film version of Sunrise's "Gundam" giant robot franchise, announcing the plan on Thursday, July 5 at the 2018 Anime Expo, which is taking place in Los Angeles.

The studio will co-produce the feature film based on the popular Japanese anime. Cale Boyter will oversee the project for Legendary with the Sunrise creative team. No actors, writers or directors are on board yet.

"Gundam" was first launched in 1979 and has spanned animated TV series, manga, animated films, video games, toys and novels. The companies said while announcing the live-action movie that Gundam goods dominate master toy licensee Bandai Namco's earnings almost 40 years after its inception.

The original "Gundam" series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people on Earth. Battles are fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits.

Legendary knows a thing or two about giant robot battle as it has produced two "Pacific Rim" movies. The first film, directed by Guillermo del Toro, was released in 2013 and grossed $411 million worldwide. The follow-up, "Pacific Rim Uprising", arrived earlier this year in March, but it failed to match the commercial success of the predecessor, earning $290 million against $150-176 million budget before marketing cost.

Legendary will next release "Skyscraper" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on July 13. The company is also behind another live-action movie based on a wildly popular Japanese animated series, "Pokemon". The movie titled "Detective Pikachu", which stars Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, has wrapped filming and is set for a May 10, 2019 release in the United States.
