The 'Let Me Entertain You' singer says 'there is a block between me and sense' when asked what came into his head when he flipped the bird to the camera during the opening ceremony.

AceShowbiz - Robbie Williams has joked that he "can't trust" himself after making a rude hand gesture during his live performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.

The British singer helped kick off the international soccer tournament by performing a medley of hits including Angels, Feel and Let Me Entertain You on the soccer pitch at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia last week (end June 17), and caused controversy when he flipped his middle finger to the cameras covering the event live.

Robbie has now spoken about the rude gesture for the first time, joking on U.K. show This Morning on Tuesday, June 19, that he was giving viewers a one-minute countdown.

"I thought to myself, 'It's really important at these kinds of things not to cause an international incident' and I didn't," he joked. "There was a minute to countdown, so I did a one minute countdown. I can't trust me! The last thing I said to my manager before we sat down on the sofa here, was 'What could go wrong?' "

"Because I don't know what I'm going to do at any time. The plan was, sing in key and don't fall over and 99 per cent of the plan, I pulled off."

When asked if the idea just popped into his head, he replied: "Nothing pops into my head. There is a block between me and sense. Then something happens and then five minutes later, (I said), 'I did didn't I'?"

The gesture was broadcast live in the U.S. and Fox TV bosses had to issue an apology.

During the interview, Robbie addressed rumours he would be joining The X Factor U.K. as a judge, saying he’d love to do it but nothing has been signed. The 44-year-old also joked that he would have to behave himself during the live shows as he'd be told off by his wife Ayda Field, who is also rumoured to be joining the panel.
