The new 13-part season 3 of the controversial teen drama is set to premiere in 2019.

AceShowbiz - Despite the never-ending backlash against "13 Reasons Why", Netflix still wants to keep the teen drama around. The streaming giant has just renewed the series for a third season.

Netflix announces the renewal on its official Twitter account, sharing a brief video of someone opening a locker that has the number three written on it. "What happens now? Season 3 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming."

The renewal is quite surprising because the Parents Television Council in the U.S. has urged the streaming giant to pull out the drama from its platform. Despite a PSA and mature content disclaimer, the second season of "13 Reasons Why" is considered to have "potentially harmful content" in its storylines which may "harm teens and children."

Both season 1 and season 2, which was premiered last month, drew criticism among viewers. While the first season was criticized due to the gruesome depiction of teen suicide, the sophomore season sparked concern after it aired a male rape graphic scene. The cast, however, insisted that the storyline is an important subject matter that needs to be heard.

The second season continued the story of the late Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) and the aftermath of her death. However, Hannah won't be featured in the coming season.

Langford previously confirmed that she wouldn't return for another season. "I guess if I could put Hannah's life into season 1 and then say it was kind of like being in purgatory for season 2, and then being able to officially say goodbye to her. It definitely felt like time," the Golden Globe Award nominee shared.

The new 13-part season 3 is set to premiere in 2019.
