The 'Westworld' star is the latest actor linked to the project after Paramount denied Paul Rudd's possible involvement in the upcoming adaptation of SEGA's video game series.

AceShowbiz - James Marsden may trade his cowboy boots for running shoes in an upcoming movie. The "Westworld" actor is set to star in a movie adaptation of SEGA's video game series "Sonic the Hedgehog" which is currently in development at Paramount Pictures, Variety reports.

The studio nabbed the film rights to the classic game in 2017 and has tapped Jeff Fowler to direct, marking his theatrical directorial debut. Patrick Casey and Josh Miller ("Transylmania", "12 Deadly Days") are set to write the script, with "Deadpool" helmer Tim Miller and Toby Ascher on board as executive producers. Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will co-produce.

The film is expected to begin shooting this summer in Vancouver, with a budget of $90 million. The live-action/animation hybrid movie is slated to arrive on November 15, 2019.

It's unclear if Marsden will take a human lead role in the movie or if he will lend his voice to the titular character. Previously, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" star Paul Rudd was reportedly offered a human role of Tom, who is described as "a cop who befriends Sonic and will likely team up to take down the evil Robotnik." Paramount, however, has said that Rudd is no longer being considered for the role of Tom.

Robotnik a.k.a. Dr. Eggman is a scientist who uses his robotic creations to fight Sonic and his friends. In the game, his plans for world domination are consistently foiled by Sonic. Sonic and friends, such as Knuckles, Tails and Shadow the Hedgehog, are featured on animated series "Sonic Boom" which is currently airing on Cartoon Network and Boomerang.

SEGA first introduces Sonic in 1991 to rival Nintendo's leading man Mario. It has sold more than 360 million copies to date, including both packaged and digital games on consoles, tablets, and mobile.

Marsden is best known for his role as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the "X-Men" film series. He currently stars as gunslinger Teddy Flood on HBO's hit sci-fi, western thriller series "Westworld". The 44-year-old actor has also starred in "The Notebook", "Superman Returns" and "Anchorman: The Legend Continues".
