The hip-hop star reportedly plans to dig up an area of his property, roughly equal in size to the existing mansion, so he can build a bunker-like basement.

AceShowbiz - Dr. Dre is planning to expand his huge Los Angeles mansion by building a mammoth fortified basement.

The hip-hop superstar turned business mogul bought the home in L.A.'s upscale Brentwood neighbourhood from American football star Tom Brady in 2014 for $40 million (£30 million), and he is now plotting home improvements that could increase its value by millions of dollars.

Documents obtained by TMZ.com show that he plans to dig up an area of his property, roughly equal in size to the existing mansion, so he can build a bunker-like basement.

Dre, real name Andre Young, is also reportedly planning to add retaining walls to his garden and fortify his home with a guard house. The former N.W.A. rapper applied for permits for the building work soon after buying the property but L.A. officials only gave him permission to start work earlier this month.

His mansion features an infinity pool with an ocean view, a poolside cabana, a gym, an outdoor kitchen and living area, seven fireplaces and a moat.

The musician and entrepreneur is worth an estimated $740 million (£560 million) having made his millions through his music and the sale of his headphone brand Beats by Dre.

He recently splashed out $4.9 million (£3.7 million) on another property in the gated community of Calabasas, California - making him a near neighbour of stars including the Kardashians and Justin Bieber.

Dre and his wife Nicole Young's secondary residence boasts a games room, a swimming pool, a home gym and spa, a cinema, a recording studio and an office.
