'Georgina [Chapman] is a brilliant designer and I don't think she should be blamed for her husband's behaviour,' the Vogue editor-in-chief says of the wife of Harvey Weinstein.

AceShowbiz - Anna Wintour has praised Scarlett Johansson for wearing Marchesa to the 2018 Met Gala. The "Ghost in the Shell" actress stepped out in a dark red gown with ombre tulle skirt to the event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night (May 7), becoming the first A-list star to wear a dress from the label co-founded by Georgina Chapman since news of her soon-to-be ex-husband Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct broke last year.

Speaking about Johansson's outfit during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Wednesday night (May 09), U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief and Met Gala organiser Anna Wintour had nothing but praise for both women.

"Georgina is a brilliant designer and I don't think she should be blamed for her husband's behaviour," she shared. "I think it was a great gesture of support on Scarlett's part to wear a dress like that, a beautiful dress like that, on such a public occasion."

British designer Chapman has largely stayed out of the public eye since she announced plans to divorce movie mogul Weinstein last October.

But following the Met Gala, Johansson explained that she had worked with both Chapman and Marchesa co-founder Keren Craig on the ensemble and was very pleased with how it turned out.

"I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers," the 33-year-old said in a statement.
