AceShowbiz - The tapes were just the beginning, it turns out. Netflix has released the first teaser of sophomore season of its controversial teen drama, "13 Reasons Why". Through the teaser, fans seemingly get the answer to the new retro technology that will take over Hannah's (Katherine Langford) iconic cassette tapes.

The teaser sees a slew of characters on the series being surrounded by polaroid photos. They seem like a normal teenager, but the photos reveal the darkness and secret they have been hiding. The first character featured in the teaser is Christian Navarro's Tony, who is holding Hanna's tapes while getting off of a car. It is followed by a scene of Jessica (Alisha Boe) smiling brightly at her phone but is actually crying deep inside her heart.

The new teaser suggests that Bryce (Justin Prentice) doesn't seem to change despite the mess he did in the first season which culminated in Hannah taking her own life. He is seen relaxing with new character Chloe (Anne Winters), the "It" girl and head cheerleader at Liberty High, while pouring alcohol in glass. Things don't seem good afterwards as the polaroid photos feature Chloe seemingly getting drunk while Bryce sports an evil smirk.

Also featured in the teaser is school guidance counselor Kevin Porter (Derek Luke) and Hannah's parents, the latter of who are still trying to bring justice to their daughter's death. The teaser concludes with Clay (Dylan Minnette) picking up a polaroid photo of Hannah which has "the tapes were just the beginning" at the back of it.

The upcoming season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of Hannah's death. Meanwhile, the other characters attempt to recover following the shocking revelation from the 13 cassette tapes which Hannah left that detail the reasons why she committed suicide. The new season will see Hannah's parents filing a lawsuit against the school. "A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up," the official logline reads.

The first season of "13 Reasons Why" sparked criticism from many people over its brutal depiction of teen suicide. The series prompted schools to send letters to parents to warn them about the danger of watching the Netflix series. In addition, a study suggested that suicide searches increased following the release of "13 Reasons Why".

Despite the backlash, Netflix is still going with a second season of the series. Also starring Brandon Flynn, Bryce Cass, Chelsea Alden, Allison Miller and Samantha Logan among others, season 2 of "13 Reasons Why" premieres on Friday, May 18 on Netflix.
