Meghan Markle and Prince Harry experienced a security scare as they received a package which reportedly contained white substance. British police are investigating the package along with a threatening letter, which was sent to the royal couple, as a "racist hate crime."
The package was delivered to St James' Palace in London, England, on February 12. According to Metropolitan Police, the white substance, which previously sparked an anthrax scare, on the package was tested and confirmed as non-suspicious. However, officers are still investigating an allegation of malicious communications that relates to the same package.
In a statement, Scotland Yard said, "Officers are also investigating an allegation of malicious communications, which relates to the same package, and it is being treated as a racist hate crime." The force added, "The matter is being investigated by officers from the Met's counter-terrorism command." It is also reported that no arrest has been made.
The letter was allegedly addressed to Kensington Palace, though it was never made to the residence of Prince Harry "due to security systems in place."
A source alleged that the letter had "racist undertones" as Meghan is from a mixed-race background. Her father, Tom, is Caucasian, while her mother, Doria, is African American.
The upcoming royal wedding, which takes place on May 19, will put security as its top priority. The late Princess Diana's former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, tells Entertainment Tonight, "From my own experiences -- and speaking to colleagues within the last few weeks -- Scotland Yard and neighboring police forces that will be part of this operation will be only too aware of how important it is to make sure that no stone is left unturned, and you know, one talks in this day of austerity of finance."
He continues, "Trust me on this occasion, finance has nothing to do with this. Scotland Yard, together with Thames Valley Police -- which will be policing this event -- money is not an object, and they make sure that the very best of security is put on display to make sure that security is not compromised."
