'Wonder Woman' and 'Stranger Things' Among AFI Top 10 Movies and TV Shows for 2017

Other works to be honored at an AFI luncheon in January include 'Dunkirk', 'Get Out', 'Big Little Lies' and 'Game of Thrones'.

AceShowbiz - As the award season has begun, the American Film Institute has announced its pick of the 10 best movies and TV shows of the year. Among the movie honorees are Patty Jenkins-directed "Wonder Woman", Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" as well as critical darlings and potential Oscar contenders like "Call Me by Your Name", "Get Out", "Lady Bird" and "The Post".

Meanwhile, the 10 best TV shows of 2017 include some of the most-talked about titles this year such as "Big Little Lies", "Game of Thrones", "Stranger Things" and "This is Us". In addition to the 10 movies and the 10 TV series, AFI is giving a special award to PBS' Ken Burns documentary series "The Vietnam War".

AFI's juries determined that those selected works advance the art of the moving image, enhance the cultural heritage of America's art form, inspire audiences and artists and make a mark on American society.

"At a time when the world seems defined by division, storytellers bring us together as one," AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said in a statement released on Thursday, December 7. "AFI Awards is honored to celebrate this community of artists who challenge and inspire us, entertain and enlighten us - ultimately reminding us of our common heartbeat."

This year's juries were chaired by AFI board of trustees vice chairs Tom Pollock (for film) and Richard Frank (for TV). Other jury members included Judd Apatow, Halle Berry, Jamie Lee Curtis, Leonard Maltin, authors and scholars representing prestigious universities with recognized motion picture arts and TV programs and film and TV critics from media outlets like NPR, Rolling Stone, TV Guide and The Washington Post.

The honorees will be recognized at a luncheon which is scheduled to take place on January 5 in Los Angeles.
