Quentin Tarantino is planning to develop a "Star Trek" movie at Paramount. According to a new report from Deadline, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has "a great idea" for the next installment of the sci-fi movie series, and he has shared the idea with J.J. Abrams, who himself is currently busy preparing for "Star Wars Episode IX".
Sources have told the news outlet that Tarantino and Abrams are in the process of setting up a writers' room. If the script is approved by both parties, Tarantino may direct the potential project, with Abrams attached to produce.
Should the report be true, it's an unexpected move for Tarantino, who's always come up with his own original films. Besides, the 54-year-old filmmaker is currently working on getting a distributor for what is supposedly the penultimate film in his career, an untitled Manson Family murders project.
Additionally, the untitled Star Trek project will probably be the last for Tarantino, who confirmed early last month that he's retiring after his tenth movie. "Drop the mic. Boom. Tell everybody, 'Match that s**t,' " he said at the Adobe Max creativity conference in San Diego. He added, "Hopefully, the way I define success when I finish my career is that I'm considered one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived. And going further, a great artist, not just filmmaker."
Paramount's last "Star Trek" feature was 2016's "Star Trek Beyond", and a fourth movie is being planned with the same cast. It remains to be seen whether Tarantino will take the reigns of the existing film franchise.
Tarantino ever said he would make a "Star Trek" movie rather than a "Star Wars" film. In a 2015 interview with Nerdist podcast, the "Pulp Fiction" helmer said he preferred the former because he's a big fan of the original series.
"The only thing that limited them was their '60s budget and eight-day shooting schedule," he said. "You could take some of the classic 'Star Trek' episodes and easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some amazing, amazing stuff." The "Django Unchained" director called the time-travel focused "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" as one of the best "Trek" episodes ever written.
