A new director may finally bring our favorite card-throwing mutant to the big screen. Deadline reports that the director of three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, Gore Verbinski, is in the middle of negotiation to helm Channing Tatum's "Gambit (2018)" at Fox. If the deal is sealed, Verbinski will be the third director tapped to helm the project after both "The Bourne Identity" director Rupert Wyatt and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" director Doug Liman dropped out.

In the "Gambit" adaptation, Tatum will play Remy LeBeau, a mutant from New Orleans whose abilities include card-throwing, hand-to-hand combat and the use of bou staff. The 37-year-old actor has been expected to play this role since 2014, and he even has been practicing his Cajun accent for the movie. However, with the constant script problems, the directors had changed twice and resulted in the delay of the movie's release.

With Verbinski on board the project as believed, "Gambit" may finally see its future. It was not too long ago that Tatum confirmed that the project was starting over. "We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky -- we got hit with some setbacks but I think it was for a good reason," he said in a recent interview with HeyUGuys. "We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn't seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then 'Deadpool' and 'Logan' came through and kicked the doors down. Now we're really getting to do some of the things we've always wanted to do with the script -- we've just sort of started over."

A rumor popped out that Daniel Craig was eyed to act as Gambit main villain, Mr. Sinister, and the plot details for the movie were revealed. As for now, Gambit is still in development and the release date remains unknown.
