Lucasfilm makes an adjustment to "Star Wars Episode IX" release date. The third installment of the new "Star Wars" trilogy was originally scheduled for May 24, 2019, but it has been postponed for seven months. The film is now set for December 20, 2019 in the United States, a week after "Wonder Woman 2".

The delay was announced shortly after J.J. Abrams was signed on to replace "Jurassic World" director Colin Trevorrow who left the movie earlier this month. The "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" helmer will sit behind the lens and help wrote the script Chris Terrio.

Lucasfilm said Trevorrow's exit was a mutual decision, but rumors suggested the director was canned because of the tension between the director and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Script issues reportedly made their working relationship become "unmanageable."

Colin Trevorrow's departure came after Phil Lord and Chris Miller exited the Han Solo stand-alone movie due to creative differences. The duo was later replaced by Ron Howard. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" director Gareth Edwards also seemed to have similar issues. He handled the principal photography, but the movie underwent extensive reshoots under a different director, Tony Gilroy.

J.J. Abrams was credited for helping revive "Star Wars" franchise with "The Force Awakens". It was a commercial hit, grossing over 2 billion worldwide and becoming the third highest grossing film of all time. It introduced a new generation of heroes like Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) as well as villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

The trio will return in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" which is set to come out on December 15. The Han Solo movie starring Alden Ehrenreich will follow on May 25, 2018. Another stand-alone movie focusing on Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi is also in the works, but no release date has been announced.
